Add Relation: Mentor / Mentee
This comes from religious grounds. I understand that WoP is meant to be respectful of all religions and cultures, but as a Catholic, I find it kind of misleading and disrespectful to have the concept of a Godparent when not used in the Catholic sense.
I’m not saying delete the role. I am saying to add a way to not use it but still have the same kind of relation but not in a religious sense.
I know that you’ll likely be like “well a lot of people use the term Godfather” and I agree, but there is a deep tie to Godparents and parents that is improperly demonstrated and used on site.
A godparent’s job according to the English Catholic Church:
Give their time to your godchild to talk to about the bigger questions of life – questions about hope, faith and love.
Model and encourage them to develop Christian values – being kind and compassionate towards others, being generous towards others in need with time or money and standing against things in the world that cause injustice and suffering.
Pray for their godchild through the ups and downs of their life and their faith journey.
Show them practically how to make good choices in life, for themselves and for others. This might mean talking to them about how to stay healthy, how to resist temptations that can harm us and other people, how to care for God’s amazing world and how to handle peer pressure as they grow older.
Help them to learn more about the Christian faith, through their church and in other ways. Going to church with them, talking about what the Bible shows us and helping them learn how to pray are all brilliant ways to support your godchild.
Not everyone can be a Godparent and there are certain requirements to do so. However, on site I am seeing people with three pairs of Godparents, Godparents who are still in school, and people just choosing Godparents willy nilly without understanding what a Godparent is.
So, I would like to ask that you add the Mentor and Mentee relations. The Godparent relation can still be used by anyone, but it gives people the choice to have something other than Godparent if they are not interested in God, and they can also use it if they do not want the parent aspect.
In the HP Wikia:
A godparent (either godfather or godmother, depending on gender), in many denominations of Christianity, is someone who sponsors a child's baptism. The term does not always have explicitly religious overtones, since the secular view of a godparent tends to be an individual chosen by the parents to take an interest in the child's upbringing and personal development, and to take care of the child should anything happen to the parents. (Yes, I get that it can be non-religious, but that doesn’t stop it from being offensive and annoying to some who understand its religious values)
However, while this could be a reasoning, it could be also changed with the more appropriate co-parent or mentor/mentee without offending anyone. I feel like the term should still stay for those who wish to use it this way, but I would also like to open up a new relation for those more suitable.
My Own Opinion:
I hate the way that Godparent is used on site, because it is used to freely and given so freely. It upsets myself, as a person of Faith, that I would see people dish out Godparents at the birth of their IG child without understanding the complex responsibilities of the role, and I will say that it… for me… is kind of sacrilegious and offensive. I personally ask you to consider adding the role of mentee/mentor, not just to make Christians feel more comfortable, but also people who are non-Christians to feel like they do not have to include God into their relationships
